Strong Results for Garrison and Steinke

It was a good weekend for Bobby Garrison and Gared Steinke, both of whom have strong connections to our area (Garrison is from Sparks and Steinke rides for the Reno-based Sinnister Racing team.)

Garrison began his bid for the 2011 WORCS title with a strong third-place finish at the opening round in Taft, California. After a stint on Husqvarna, Garrison is now on Kawasaki, and the new ride seemed to agree with him nicely as he bested many of this year's other title favorites at the opener. And if you haven't seen his 2011 promo video yet, you can check it out here.

Steinke made his mark via an 11th place finish in the 250cc class at the AMA Supercross in Oakland, earning the first SX main-event appearance of his career. Steinke qualified with a ninth-place finish in Heat 2, and then posted some very impressive lap times in the main, with his fastest being less than two seconds slower than the fastest lap of race winner Broc Tickle.

Keep an eye on worcsracing.com and amasupercross.com for more results from our locals as the season moves on.

RIP Nathan Woods

The dirt biking world lost a talented and determined man this week when two-time WORCS champion and ISDE Gold Medalist Nathan Woods died after a practice crash as he prepared for the 2011 WORCS Series.

Godspeed, Nathan Woods, and condolences to all his family and friends.

Bobby Garrison's Dream

Bobby Garrison has been oh-so-close to the WORCS overall title before, but he's banking on 2011 to be the year he finally seals the deal. He'll be aboard a Kawasaki this year, a decision inspired by the symbolism-heavy dream featured in the video below (or so I assume.)

Go get 'em in '11, Bobby.

Reporter bashes L.A. SX

As hard as it is for us to believe, not everyone loves supercross. Check out what one L.A. sportswriter wrote about the AMA Supercross Series as it visited Dodger Stadium for the first time last weekend.

Be warned, though--there is a whole lot of ignorance and blowhard griping going on here, and based on the report, I'm guessing he didn't even bother to stay for the race.

DC Shoes Training Facility Ride Day

This video features DC athletes Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana, Adam Cianciarulo, Nate Adams and others tearing up the DC Motocross training facility (which looks a lot like Pala Raceway to me.) Much of the footage is from a helicopter, which captures a lot of cool angles.

Super Slow Motion Video

The action itself is slightly dated, but the slow-motion treatment is very cool. I particularly love the rumbling fender and side panels on Reed's bike.

Privateer Life with Jake Canada

Anaheim 1 may be over, but there is still a crop of 250cc racers who are preparing for their first race of the year at the East Coast opener in a few weeks (Dean Wilson and Justin Barcia, to name a couple.)

California's Jake Canada is one of the privateers who will be there, and this clip shows a bit of his preseason preparation.

Supercross Thoughts: Anaheim 1

One mark of a great rider is his ability to bounce back from adversity, and Ryan Villopoto did a lot of bouncing back at Anaheim 1. On one level, he was fighting back from his season-ending broken leg at last year's St. Louis Supercross (he hasn't raced since,) and in the main event he was also fighting back from a forgettable qualifying round (he turned the fifth fastest time in practice, and then was caught and passed by James Stewart in his heat race.) But none of it mattered in the main, as Villopoto was the only one of the main contenders to get a good start, which he capitalized on by riding a mistake-free race.

Ryan Dungey probably wasn't hoping for second-place finish, but it was still a solid result to lead into the season. From the 10th lap on, Dungey, Villopoto and Stewart all held steady against one another, which suggested that those three are likely going to have some battles--once they all manage to start together. But don't count out Trey Canard or even Chad Reed--both of them turned in good rides that suggested they might contend once they get settled (Canard on his new 450 and Reed on his new Honda.)

Josh Grant, Brett Metcalfe and Andrew Short probably all hoped for more in their debut rides on new teams, but in a field this stacked, a top-ten finish is nothing to be ashamed of, and they all managed that. And Kevin Windham and Ivan Tedesco both showed flashes of brilliance throughout the night, including Tedesco's main-event holeshot and subsequent battle to stay up front. He couldn't quite stay in the top five, but it wasn't because he was too intimidated to try.

In the 250s, what is there to say about Team Pro Circuit that hasn't been written on countless championship trophies? Josh Hansen, Broc Tickle and Tyla Rattray all looked spot-on. It could be a long year for riders on bikes that aren't florescent green in the 250cc class.

That said, Martin Davalos quietly looked very good on his new Suzuki, despite having to come from the Last Chance Qualifier, and Ken Roczen looked likely to run up front at some point this year too, though a couple of crashes and mediocre starts held him back on this night.

Next stop: this Saturday in Phoenix.

Moto Source SX Party

Wow...A1 is only three days away, and all of the heavy hitters are ready to go. Will Dungey tighten his grip on his 2010 titles? Can Stewart return to form as the fastest man on the planet? Does Reed have what it takes to win on a Honda? Will Villopoto exact revenge for his disappointments last year? Will Pourcel choose oatmeal or scrambled eggs as he eats breakfast back home in France?

OK, maybe that last one isn't that exciting, but I'm dying to see the rest of those questions answered. And if you are too, a good place to see them answered will be at the second annual Moto Source SX Party. Check out the details below and prepare to yell yourself hoarse at the TV as the 2011 season finally takes off.
