Luke Sorenson has quite a knack for capturing local race action on video, and this Stead clip is an excellent example.

I've ridden the mountain bike trail they were on in the video and it's pretty fun. I've ridden Lake Elsinore too (the moto track in the video), though I have fewer nice things to say about that place. No idea why anyone goes there when there are so many better tracks in SoCal.
By the way, if you haven't seen Hart's World Championship run from last year, set aside three minutes and check it out (even if you don't follow bikes). I still watch it each time I come across it, even though I've seen it 20 times by now. He beat the field by 11 seconds in this race, which would be like lapping the field at A1. Note the huge whip near the end of the run. The kid rides loose ... very loose.
Specialized Meets Motocross - More Mountain Bike Videos
As it happens, I got a new Specialized bike myself recently, which I'm pretty fond of, so learning more about the company's connection to moto is just icing on the cake.

The Anaheim SX was awesome last weekend, but these guys from an undated 1960s "scramble" race were pretty pinned in their own right. Check out the last minute of the video for some intense last-lap action.
Here's the 2012 version for comparison.
In this clip from Rockstar Suzuki, the preseason routine is in full swing as the riders shoot photos for their 2012 autograph stock. It also shows Blake Wharton running #956, a tribute to the late Jesse Masterpool.
Here's a cool clip from this year's Day in the Dirt, an event that brings out moto lovers of all types for a weekend of ripping and bench racing. See if you can spot a certain mx775 forum member in this one.

In this Alli Sports video, Chad Reed and Eli Tomac square off to test their historical moto knowledge. Tomac impresses here, but Reed does pretty decently too -- particularly since the questions are virtually all U.S-related and he's not even from the States (as he points out).
Props to northern Nevada's Justin Soule on his fourth-place finish.
Don't ask questions ... just turn it up.
Will Dungey agree with the orange bike and reclaim the titles he won in 2010? Only time will tell, but he seems pretty comfortable so far in this Racer X video from the KTM test track.
Troy Adamitis, the filmmaker known for his superb work on the AMA Nationals, turned his lens on Loretta Lynn's this year for this piece on racers and families attempting to climb the ladder in amateur motocross. While many of the families featured here will seem crazy to outsiders--and some of them may well be--most of us who've lived the motocross life for long enough will understand their plight in racing.
The 2011 Motocross of Nations is a memory now, but if you haven't seen this excellent clip, spend 10 minutes and check it out. It will make you proud of the U.S.A. and also make you cringe at the roost being thrown at the St. D'Angely circuit. Looks painful.

Both the AMA Nationals and FIM Grand Prix Series had their penultimate rounds this past weekend, and there was great racing in both Southwick and Gaildorf. Here are the highlights from the AMA circuit, where the 450cc series leader, Ryan Villopoto, tightened his grip on his points lead, and Dean Wilson clinched the 250cc title with one race to spare...
...and here's the action from the MX2 class at the German GP, where Ken Roczen sought to wrap up his own title one round early over Jeffrey Herlings.

Check out the highlights from last weekend's race at Southwick. Watch for Dungey's frantic charge onto the track after missing nearly the entire first lap of the second moto due to mechanical issues. Dungey's effort kept him in the title chase as he finished a remarkable seventh in the moto after entering the track just ahead of leader and moto winner Justin Barcia (who was beginning his second lap!)
Fans of golf and motocross may know that Rickie Fowler, 2010 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, is also a capable motocrosser. He pulls off a pretty impressive stoppie-to-putt maneuver in this clip from Puma, but I secretly think that Rickie asked to do this video simply to bring his YZ onto a golf course. Talk about the perfect excuse.
I met Drake McElroy when we were both 80cc Juniors, following a moto in which we diced a little bit at Silver State Raceway in Carson City. We chatted at his truck for awhile, and I remember Drake had short, bleached hair at the time, which seemed punk-rock and pretty awesome to me.
Over the years, Drake, who grew up in Fernley, shifted from racing to freestyle, a discipline which seemed to suit his creativity and bike-handling skills well. And now he has his own show on Fuel TV, which features his exploits as he travels the world as a rider and freestyle judge. It premieres tomorrow, Monday August 15 at 10 pm EST.
Drake is an original, and I'm betting his show will be too, so give it a look if your cable provider is kind enough to provide Fuel (and you might want to consider switching if they're not, because Fuel has some excellent shows nowadays.)
This well-made clip features Mike Giese, a rider who competes on both motocross bikes and downhill mountain bikes. Giese seems pretty talented in both realms, and since I love both moto and downhill, this clip was a treat for me, and I suspect it might be for you too--even if the mountain bike thing is foreign to you.
Northern Nevada's Mike Mason earned the silver medal at the X Games' Speed and Style contest this weekend, narrowly losing out to Nate Adams in the final round.
Mason, a former career racer, had Adams covered speed-wise, but came up just short in the style category. Still, the medal was the fourth earned by a northern Nevada resident in this year's X Games (following Matt Buyten's step-up gold, Adam Jones' freestyle silver and Justin Soule's Enduro X bronze.)
Northern Nevada's Matt Buyten has done it again and brought home another X Games Step-up gold medal. Congrats, Matt.
And if you look closely in this video, you'll also spot one of our forum's regulars.
For race fans, 2011 has been a delight. After a super-tight supercross season in the 450cc class, the 450cc outdoor nationals are shaping up to be a similar barnburner, and the 250cc class is plenty close too.
Catch up with the action via this post-Washougal installment of the Racer X Motocross Show.
Ever wonder what it's like to be mid-pack on the first lap of an AMA national? Wonder no more--Garth Swanepoel take you there with his helmet cam! Now if only we could get some tear-offs for that thing...
Everyone in the '90s and '00s knew Greg King at the local races: he was a respected racer as well as an excellent prep man for the now-defunct Champion Speedway motocross course. He helped create many of my favorite layouts there: flowing berms and incredible jumps, all shaped to perfection.
Later, when my parents lived down the street from him, I found out he was driving the rig for the Yamaha of Troy squad. It was always slightly surreal to turn onto my parent's street and see the massive YoT hauler sitting there, and nowadays he's driving for arguably the most successful team in the sport: Team Pro Circuit/Kawasaki.
Watch below as Greg talks about his job traveling the national circuit.
While the FIM World Championship circuit is a world apart from our U.S. motocross scene, these excellent round-by-round videos from Moto magazine are enough to make me a fan.

Tim Ferry's straight-ahead demeanor won't let him really sell the parody aspect of this video, but his KX125 does sounds pretty awesome, and his Canadian trainer is pretty funny too.
Youth meets experience in this short clip from DC. Canard looks incredible throughout this, so there's no wonder why he's been such a contender in SX this year. Also note his nac-nac at the end--a fitting tribute to its inventor.

The kids are riding well in this video, but I did chuckle when Jake Lyon says near the end, "I try to go to the gym every day, so, like, four to five days a week." But I'll assume that was a slip of the tongue rather than a failure of the home-schooling system.

If lightly-clothed women and kilt-clad men offend you--Wilson is Scottish by birth, after all--then this video isn't for you. But if you're cool with those things, you'll also be rewarded by the sweet sound of a very healthy Kawasaki as Wilson goes out to test in the second half of the video. Man that thing sounds strong.

Bobby Garrison has been oh-so-close to the WORCS overall title before, but he's banking on 2011 to be the year he finally seals the deal. He'll be aboard a Kawasaki this year, a decision inspired by the symbolism-heavy dream featured in the video below (or so I assume.)
Go get 'em in '11, Bobby.

I wouldn't have thought that Danny MacAskill--the Scottish street-trials legend who we've featured on the message board a few times--couldn't possibly top his previous video segments. But his new Red Bull-backed clip arrived today, and yes--it's even more amazing than the previous ones, which themselves have become some of the most watched sports clips ever posted on the web.
It's bicycles, not motorcycles, but stop what you're doing and watch this clip right now. Seriously.
Northern Nevada has produced more top-level freestyle motocrossers than nearly any other place in the world. Mike Mason, Dustin Miller and Brian Foster all grew up in the Carson Valley, and they're still doing their thing there today.
When you've got championships to defend, the off-season ain't that long. Check the cool twin-pipe muffler on his RM-Z450.

As Mr. Moto pointed out awhile back on our message board, Fuel TV's show on the outdoor U.S. MX nationals, Inside the Outdoors, is available on Hulu's web site. If you haven't checked it out, you definitely should right here.
I just watched episode four of season one, which focuses largely on Mike Alessi's ill-fated attempt to return from a knee injury last summer, and it was completely fascinating. If you love The Great Outdoors movie series (as I do,) then you'll also love this show (both franchises are produced by filmmaker Troy Adamitis.)
As for the Alessis, if any of your moto moms or dads are looking for someone to show you how to be an awful mini parent, Tony Alessi is more than willing to oblige during the course of this episode. The guy cares about his son, without a doubt, but it seems like he's probably doing more harm than good for him at this point.
But check out the episode and see if you agree or disagree--it's a good one either way.
Here are local riders Greg Garrison and Tim O'Brien discussing the Supermoto course that's going in for next weekend's Xtreme Outlaws event at the Grand Sierra Resort.
