On a day that saw brisk wind and bitterly cold temperatures, Andrew Valdez (85) glided past it all to take a convincing 1-1 victory in the Schoolboy class at round six of the MX West Spring Series.
Valdez had to battle mediocre starts in addition to the wind and cold, but it was clear from early in each moto that he was headed to the front. Valdez was one of the few riders tripling into the difficult Carson rhythm section, and nearly the only non-pro rider doing so. Second place on the day went to the fast-starting Dean Wilcox, whom Valdez had to chase down in both motos to take the lead. Brandon Baxter claimed third.
Valdez also looked like a threat for the 125cc Intermediate class win after he put in another come-from-behind ride to win the first moto. But a first-lap crash in the second moto ended his shot at the overall and opened the door for a list of close-running intermediates.
First-moto runner-up Nate Vandermade took the early lead in the second moto, followed closely by Ryan Eager, Casey Dean, and Kyle Congdon. Eager took over the lead after a few laps, only to throw it away with a fall shortly after. From then Vandermade again took the lead with Dean close behind. Dean soon took over the lead, which he would hold to the finish. But it was Vandermade’s consistent 2-2 tally that earned the overall victory, followed by Dean in second, and Congdon in third.
J.L. Bitz and Nick Baugh split the 125cc and 250cc Pro victories on the day, with each rider claiming a 1-1 tally. Bitz had to fight off a leaking fork seal, which he said was causing the forks to dive in some sections.
“All together, it was pretty good,” Bitz said of his day after the final race. “She was diving on me pretty bad. But I felt a lot better in the second 125cc moto.”
In mini action, Wayne Appleton scored a convincing win the 80cc Intermediate class over Dakota May and Zak Riley. Just below them, Dylan Bauer topped the 80cc Junior class. David Rumbaugh and Jake Maga claimed second and third.
