When Ryan Hazen (6) topped the results in the 125 and 250cc Intermediate classes at round six of the MX West Nevada State Championship Series, no one could say he hadn’t worked for it.
Hazen battled mediocre starts for much of the day, requiring him to slice through the competitive Intermediate classes each time. But at the end of the afternoon he had still taken three of the four moto wins aboard his Red Line/Big Valley Honda/Troy Lee Designs/TCR/EVS-backed Hondas.
After a mid-pack start in the first 125cc moto, Hazen chased early leader Nate Vandermade, who had taken the holeshot and established a comfortable lead. Hazen finally reached striking distance of Vandermade in the closing laps and eventually carved an inside line beneath him to take the lead. Vandermade came home a strong second.
Ryan Eager grabbed the second-moto holeshot while Hazen again found himself mid-pack early in the moto. But once again Hazen plowed through the field and took the point with only two laps remaining. Eager, who had led up to then, finished second on the moto, though a poor first-moto score kept him further back in the overall standings. Vandermade took second on the day.
Hazen again battled Eager in the 250cc class, as the two swapped moto wins, with the overall victory going to Hazen through his 2-1 score. Eager’s 1-2 posting earned him second overall.
“I just had to relax, take my time and pass people safely,” Hazen said of his charges to the front. “It wasn’t too bad. I just took the insides and passed a lot of people there. And my bikes ran great, so that helps, too.”
In Pro action, Tony Evans ruled much of the day, taking a 1-1 score to victory in the 250cc class. Evans looked to be the favorite in the 125 class after he won the first moto, too, but a frightening tangle in the first corner of the second moto with Nick Baugh left both riders with DNFs. Each rider walked away from the incident, though.
“The track was great and I had fun on the 450, just trying to be smooth all day,” Evans said. “I had a little crash in the first turn in the 125cc moto and bent my bike up a little so I couldn’t finish. But we got everything together for the 250cc moto and went out there and got it done.”
Matt Manha avoided the first-turn chaos to claim the 125cc win after a spirited battle with his brother Ryan, who finished second overall.
