It’s not often that Carson City receives much rain, but the unusual conditions at round eight of the MX West Nevada State Championship Series made little difference as Tony Evans (66) rode to another victory in the 250cc Pro class.
Evans, who has now won three of the last four rounds of the series in the 250cc Pro division, claimed another 1-1 score despite intermittent rains that kept the Nevada Motocross Development-prepped course slick for much of the day.
The first moto saw Evans blast his Thor/Parts Unlimited/Pfeiffer Power Sports/Alpinestars-backed CRF450R into the lead ahead of Clint Martin, who was also CRF450R-mounted. Evans set a quick pace, but Martin hung close in the beginning laps, staying within a second or two of the lead until the gap began to grow around the halfway point. Evans stretched the lead throughout the second half of the race to take the win while Martin settled in for a strong second.
In the second moto, Evans again grabbed the holeshot, but this time it was clear that there would be no challenges. Evans almost immediately gained a comfortable advantage as the pack sorted itself out behind him. Martin made his way into second early in the moto, but Evans continued to pull away on a course that had become slicker as a result of steady rain in the minutes before. The conditions changed nothing for Evans, however, as he powered to another convincing moto win and the overall victory. Martin again finished solidly in second.
“The second 250cc race was a little slippery because of the rain,” Evans said. “But I just used throttle control. I love my Honda because it hooks up so well in the slick stuff.”
Evans also nearly snagged a victory in the 125cc Pro class, but a washout while battling Tommy Jean for the lead in the second moto relegated him to second overall. Jean grabbed the overall win with a 2-1 score over Evans’ 1-3 tally.
