Carson City, Nev; Nov. 14, 2004

Tony Sherman (470) and Jordan Mockridge are not the usual contenders in northern Nevada motocross, but at round 12 of the MX West Nevada State Championship Series, they showed Nevada what they are capable of.

Sherman, who hails from northern California, and Mockridge, an Oregon native, took a combined total of five class wins on the day. Sherman topped the 125cc and 250cc Pro ranks while Mockridge claimed victories in the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate divisions and Schoolboy class.

Sherman was dealt a particularly tough hand in the 125cc race. After an early crash left him well behind in the first moto, Sherman fought back to reach Tommy Jean and Tony Evans, who were engaged in their own battle for the lead, on the second-to-last lap.

Sherman sliced past Jean, who had led much of the moto, and affixed his YZ250F to the rear fender of Evans’ Honda. Evans held the lead to just past the white flag, where Sherman found his opening and took the lead. Evans gave chase, but Sherman held on to take the well-earned moto win.

The second moto saw J.L. Bitz grab the early lead just ahead of Sherman. Bitz, who was riding a new CRF250R, had retired from the first moto after going down early in an exchange with Jean. Sherman immediately began applying pressure, but Bitz was unfazed. As the laps clicked by, Bitz held a steady one-to-two second advantage over Sherman.

But it all unraveled on the last lap. Bitz, who had refused to make a single mistake throughout the previous seven laps, rode over a berm and handed the lead, and the win, to Sherman. Bitz followed to take second in the moto, but Jean took second overall via a 3-3 tally.

Sherman completed his day with another 1-1 score in the 250cc Pro class.

Mockridge handled the Intermediate and Schoolboy classes aboard his Yamahas in convincing fashion, though Aron Harvey kept him honest throughout the day. Mockridge battled poor starts in many of the motos, but in the end won all but the first Schoolboy moto, where he took second behind Harvey. Harvey scored second overall in all three classes.

In 30+ Pro action, action sports icon Shaun Palmer took the win aboard a CR250R, mixing it up throughout the day with the 125cc Pro contenders that ran on the same gate. Greg King scored second.
