Fernley, Nevada; October 10, 2004

Butch Stillmock (5) and Justin Mastalka needed no introduction to each other at round seven of the MX West Nevada State Championship Series--these two friendly rivals knew they would meet, as usual, at the front of the 30+ Pro class.

While both riders ended up with self-described good days, Stillmock’s tenacity earned him the 30+ victory, despite a shaky start that began with Mastalka grabbing the lead early in the first moto.

Stillmock chased Mastalka during the early laps, but in time the gap between the two began to grow. Stillmock looked slightly uncertain, which might have been because of a recent bike change. Stillmock was on a new KTM four-stroke as opposed to his two-stroke 250 of old. At the end of the moto Mastalka held a comfortable margin over Stillmock in second.

The second moto began with Steve Hawkins, another very capable rider, grabbing the holeshot. Hawkins looked very fast early, leading the pack until around lap three when he relaxed his pace and left the fight to Stillmock and Mastalka.

Stillmock took over the lead, pulling Mastalka close behind. Mastalka challenged for the lead soon after but Stillmock did not budge. Mastalka soon fell back slightly while Stillmock kept up a blistering pace. Stillmock eventually disappeared with the moto win and overall victory. Mastalka slowed toward the end, surrendering second to Kevin Truax.

“This was my fourth moto today and I’m finally getting relaxed,” Stillmock said after the second moto. “I’m getting more comfortable with the track and more comfortable with the new bike. I just tried to think about the track and not the rider behind me.”

The rider behind him, Mastalka, was pleased despite missing the win.

“The track was good and it was a three-way battle for awhile,” Mastalka said, removing a blood-soaked glove from his blistered throttle hand. “But Butch was on his game. There was no catching him.”

Mastalka gained some redemption, however, when he topped the 250 Pro race with a 1-1 score.

In the younger ranks, Aron Harvey put in an impressive performance on his way to the Schoolboy win. Harvey took part in a stiff battle with Travis McIver in the first moto until McIver retired with a mechanical failure around the halfway point. From there, Harvey set sail to take the moto win and later claimed the second moto victory to complete the 1-1 score.

Harvey also topped the 250cc Intermediates with yet another perfect tally and McIver did the same in the 125cc Intermediate division.
