Fernley, Nevada; October 31, 2004

Even though Jimmy Nelson (884) and Bobby Garrison (928) have been to far bigger ponds than the comparative fishbowl of Fernley--both riders made the show at outdoor nationals this summer--the two held nothing back at round 10 of the MX West Nevada State Championship Series.

In the first 125cc Pro moto, Nelson grabbed the holeshot just ahead of Garrison and the two immediately began leaving the pack. Garrison pressured for the lead in the opening laps, but Nelson refused to make a mistake.

The battle seemed over when Garrison went off the track briefly in the middle of the race and gave Nelson a small cushion. But Garrison picked up the charge once more and brought his CRF250R back to Nelson’s back fender, crossing the finish line just behind him for second.

Nelson put his YZ250F into the lead once more in the second moto with Garrison again on his rear wheel. Garrison attacked early, attempting a move for the lead at the beginning of the second lap.

Garrison tried to leap past Nelson in the tight back section, but his front wheel slid over the berm in the next turn, sending him to the ground. Nelson disappeared with the win while Garrison remounted to claim fourth on the moto.

Unfortunately for spectators, Nelson and Garrison remained apart for much of the 250cc contest. Nelson went 1-DNS for fourth overall after bike problems kept him out of the second moto and Garrison went 3-1 for first overall after a pair of falls slowed him in the first moto. Tommy Jean took second with a 2-2 score.

Nelson said he was pleased with the day all together.

“It was pretty good,” Nelson said. “I got two good starts. I got the holeshot in the first 250cc moto, too, but my clutch went out in that one.”

Garrison also said he was satisfied, especially considering he had just switched from his former Yamahas to a pair of new Hondas.

“I had some bad luck, just trying to get used to the new bikes,” Garrison said. “It could’ve gone better, but I’m happy with today.”
